Storytime STEM: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Updated: Apr 10, 2020
I did this activity with my Budding Scientists at the schoolhouse earlier this year, and I thought I would share it here!
If you have extra popsicle sticks from my three popsicle stick activities (Sticky Sticks, Popsicle Stick Puppetry, and/or Shadow Puppets), then you should try this simple, literacy-based engineering activity.

Supplies:
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book or video (linked below)
Alphabet letters (we used what we had, magnetic letters, but you can use any type of foam letter or you can even make some of your own on paper and just cut out squares or flash cards)
Procedure:
Read the story aloud or watch the animated video linked below.
Next, prompt your child(ren) with the following STEM challenge question:
Storytime STEM challenge: Can you use blocks build a coconut tree that can hold the letters of the alphabet like in the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom?

Finally, sit back and watch the brilliance unfold! I was amazed by the clever designs and engineering my 4 and 5-year-old students offered to solve this challenge.
